Medicare Advantage Plans Have 32.9 Million Enrolled

By Barbara Carey and Mike McCall

At the close of the 2024 enrollment period Medicare Advantage programs according to CMS gained 2.9% more members, bringing the total enrollment to 32.9 million. This number includes seniors who signed up for Medicare Advantage with Part D coverage. More seniors in your area have probably enrolled and you can expect the battles for coverage of surgeries, hospitalizations, diagnostics and skilled nursing care to accompaniment their enrollment.

The largest enrollment of new plan participants was Aetna with 533,056. CVS now owns Aetna. A distant second place was United Healthcare with 149,560 new enrollees. The third place for new Medicare Advantage enrollees was Humana with 118,169. These three plans far outdistanced any of the others for new enrollees in 2024.

Medicare Advantage Plans now have over half of the qualified seniors enrolled. Unfortunately, many seniors do not know what they will experience in terms of the approval process required and the denied claims that have come to characterize this coverage.

TCI has developed an education campaign to inform seniors of the facts before they sign up. Seniors need to make a more informed decision and their current healthcare providers have the credibility to give them the information that they need. In our opinion, no free gym membership or even groceries outweigh the restricted access and denials that are embedded in many Medicare Advantage plans. This is especially true of seniors who have chronic conditions or require a lot of medical care.

Our education tools will be available at the end of January.
