CEO Leadership VIDEO - The Weapon of Change

By Barbara Carey, President, TCI

COMPLACENCY is “baked into” healthcare. Processes are established, compliance rules and bureaucrats in every system guard the status quo. It takes a remarkable leader who can communicate to all levels in the system simultaneously and to the communities. This is very important when the system must be disrupted to thrive in the current dynamic environment.

It takes courage and a large dose of persistence to change the course of a system or single hospital. The system must be adaptable to change as an ongoing process as difficult as that is to accept.

The Weapon of Choice is VIDEO.

The CEO speaking directly to stakeholders is powerful. It cuts through the layers of management and goes to the heart of the matter. It leaps over the interpretation of others. It allows the audience to hear a message and understand it in their own terms. Using this powerful CEO weapon effectively requires these components:

  • Messaging must be clear and concise and engaging.

  • Delivering it over several short videos is better than one 4 to 5 minute video. Capture their attention and leave them wanting more is our rule.

  • Putting examples and stories from the organization makes the message real.

Where Does a CEO Find the Stories That Will Encourage Change?

Look at the hospital and clinicians actions during the pandemic. The patient celebrations, staff appreciations, use of technology to reach more people, the teamwork with each other and the physicians and the mission of saving lives. These all make powerful stories. Guess what? They demonstrate that “we don’t have to do things like we have always done them.” The system was operating from a different playbook with the core value of “saving lives.” This message resonates today. These stories show that the system can change and adapt to changing circumstances. It shows that your organization can do things and manage care differently.

Reach into your memory of that time. Find those stories. Map out how change and innovation worked in that time and how quickly change came about. There are many lessons here that you can use to move your system forward setting it on a different course. This is the CEO leadership challenge. Video messaging from the heart is a big part of the solution.
